** Blockbuster has completely updated their offering making it very difficult to make a like-for-like comparison. Their various packages now include online rentals, disks to your door and in-store rentals. Certainly worth a look if you have a Blockbuster near you and/or you don’t mind the bandwidth cost of downloading movies.

A couple of definitions...

Unlimited means you can have an unlimited number of movies per month with the restriction of not being able to hold more DVDs than your plan allows.

So if you are on a “2 disc unlimited” plan then 2 discs is the most you can have at any one time but an unlimited amount of new titles as long as you keep posting them back.

The word “unlimited” is very enticing but if you only watch a couple of movies a month then you probably don’t need it.

Limited means you have a set number of DVDs per month, let’s say 3. You will normally* have them sent to you one at a time and you will have to send each DVD back before they send another. In this example once you’ve had your third DVD in any given month you won’t get your next one until the beginning of the next month.

*In some cases the number of discs you can hold increases; for instance on the “Tesco Limited 4” you can have 2 discs at a time.

It is worth considering the speed of your postage and pattern of usage. If you only watch movies at the weekend and it takes a full week to send and receive a movie then an “unlimited 1” plan may as well be compared to a “limited 4” plan. The type of postage may also vary with the plan, some offer 1st Class postage on Unlimited and then drop down to 2nd Class for the Limited packages.

Some companies will credit you a rental the following month if you didn’t use your allocation the previous month.

These are the main companies offering cheap DVD rentals at the moment. Remember, most of them offer some kind of free trial. In no particular order then...
